H.M. Konungens tal på WADAs 10-årsmiddag

Mr. Fahey, President of WADA,
Mr. Rogge, President of the IOC,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for the Queen and me to congratulate WADA on its 10 years jubilee - an organization which is of such crucial importance for the world of sport.

During the years our family has attended many Olympic Games and World Championships around the world. Like any spectator, we naturally expect correct competitions and the athletes to play fair. Dishonesty is always unacceptable. Doping is extremely dangerous. Doping does not only ruin the competition, the sport, the reputation of a country but also the health of the athlete.

The fight against doping is, for many reasons, of outmost importance. WADA's mission cannot be overestimated. WADA is committed to increase the volume of research in order to develop new and improved detection methods and is also responsible for studying new doping threats, such as gene doping.

I agree with WADA's belief that providing value-based education programs, that will foster anti-doping behaviour and a strong anti-doping culture, is the best solution to prevent such behaviour.

Athletes and their trainers are role models for young people around the world, and it is important to show that the use of drugs is absolutely not being tolerated. It is not only bad for the sport, it is very dangerous for the life of the athlete.

Since more than 30 years Sweden has been in the forefront of the fight against the use of drugs and we strongly support WADA's work.

Let me take this opportunity to wish WADA great success during the next ten years.

Good luck and thank you!
