HM The King's greeting to the 2020 Nobel Laureates
Royal Palace, Stockholm
(The spoken version shall take precedence)
Esteemed Nobel Laureates,
Wherever you are in the world, I hope this message from the Royal Palace in Stockholm finds you well.
This is indeed a different Nobel Prize ceremony, at the end of a very different year.
The global pandemic has affected the whole world.
It presents new challenges for individuals and societies.
And it has also shone a light on the important role of science:
While countries have been focused on closing their borders, scientists around the world have been working together like never before to understand the COVID-19 virus and to develop a vaccine.
At a time like this, it feels more important than ever to celebrate those who, in the words of the great donor Alfred Nobel, “… have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.”
Esteemed laureates, I offer you my warmest congratulations on your outstanding contributions.
And I very much hope to see you here in Stockholm in the future.
