Stockholm County has 26 municipalities and more than two million inhabitants. The county was formed in 1714. At that time, the City of Stockholm was not part of the county, instead forming a separate administrative unit, under the Office of the Governor of Stockholm. However, Stockholm was the county seat, making it the only county seat in Sweden to be located outside its county. The City of Stockholm was reunited with its county on 1 January 1968.

The day in Stockholm County concludes with dinner hosted by the County Governor at the County Governor's official residence, Tessin Palace.
