The Crown Princess' biography

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland, was born on 14 July 1977 at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm.

The Crown Princess was baptised at the Royal Chapel on 27 September 1977 and given the names Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée.

H.M. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld, King Harald V of Norway and Mr Ralf Sommerlath were appointed godparents at the christening.

Crown Princess Victoria is the eldest child of His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia. She has two siblings; Prince Carl Philip, born on 13 May 1979, and Princess Madeleine, born on 10 June 1982.
In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession, which took effect on 1 January 1980, Crown Princess Victoria is heir to the Swedish throne.
The Crown Princess resides at Drottningholm Palace.


The Crown Princess attended Västerled parish pre-school from 1982-84.

In autumn 1984 she started school at Smedslättsskolan in Bromma, where she completed her junior level. She completed her intermediate level at Ålstenskolan in Bromma and went on to pursue senior studies, following a Science and Social Studies programme, at Enskilda Gymnasiet upper secondary school in Stockholm.

School graduation 1996

The Crown Princess graduated from upper secondary school in 1996. She spent her summer holidays gaining additional foreign language experience with trips to countries such as Germany and the United States.

The Crown Princess was confirmed in the summer of 1992 at Räpplinge church on the island of Öland.

Continued studies

During the 1996-97 academic year, The Crown Princess studied French at the Centre International d'Etudes Francaises at the Université Catholique l'Ouest in Angers, France.

In autumn 1997, The Crown Princess followed a specially designed programme in order to gain a general insight into the workings of the Riksdag (the Swedish Parliament) and the Swedish Government.

Studies in the USA

In the spring of 1998, Crown Princess Victoria began academic studies in Political Science and History at Yale University in the United States. 

In connection with her stay in the USA, The Crown Princess completed work experience at the United Nations in New York. She also spent time at the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C.

In autumn 2000, The Crown Princess completed studies in Conflict Resolution and International Peace-building in Uppsala.
In spring 2001, The Crown Princess participated in the Swedish Presidency of the EU.

Study programme: the Government Offices, SIDA (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and the Swedish Trade Council

In autumn 2001, The Crown Princess followed a study programme at the offices of the Swedish government. During this time she also visited the Swedish Style exhibition in Tokyo and the west coast of the USA in connection with the Nobel Jubilee.
In spring 2002, Crown Princess Victoria completed a study programme at SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation, and spent time in countries such as Uganda and Ethiopia. She also continued with her official engagements.
In autumn 2002 she completed an internship with the Swedish Trade Council in Berlin and Paris.

Basic military training

The Crown Princess continued her education in 2003 by completing a few weeks of basic military training for soldiers in international service at SWEDINT in Almnäs in Södertälje.

This was followed by study visits to Swedish industry, as well as a study and work experience programme in agriculture and forestry. The organisation Företagarna (Swedish Federation of Business Owners) arranged a programme on small and medium-sized companies.

Saudi Arabia and Hungary

In 2004, The Crown Princess travelled to Saudi Arabia and Hungary with official Swedish delegations. She also visited UN organisations in Rome and Geneva, carried out study visits to companies in Sweden and continued with her official engagements.
In autumn 2004, The Crown Princess studied at the Swedish National Defence College in Stockholm, focusing on Political Science, International Relations and Conflict Resolution.


The Crown Princess travelled extensively in spring 2005, including to Australia for the Swedish Style exhibition, and to Japan to attend the World Exposition in Aichi.

The Crown Princess also travelled to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to study international aid efforts in these countries. In June 2005 she visited Turkey with the then Swedish Minister for Trade and Industry, Thomas Östros, in order to promote Swedish-Turkish relations.

Social Science studies

The Crown Princess spent a month in China in autumn 2005. During her stay she followed the work of the Swedish embassy and travelled around the country to gain an insight into Chinese society.


The Crown Princess continued to focus her studies on Social Sciences subjects for the remainder of the autumn.

Diplomatic programme

In September 2006, Crown Princess Victoria embarked upon the diplomatic programme at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs as part of her continuing studies.

The programme included lectures, seminars and group work. The Crown Princess also carried out field trips to various authorities and institutions.
The training lasted for two terms and was completed in June 2007.


Studies in Peace and Conflict Research

The Crown Princess continued with her studies in Political Science at Stockholm University during autumn 2007 and spring 2008. She also carried out an extended study visit at the office of Sweden's Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. Crown Princess Victoria also continued with her studies in French.
The Crown Princess continued her education with studies in Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University.

Crown Princess Victoria was awarded a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies in spring 2009. The Crown Princess has 60 credits in Political Science from Stockholm University, as well as 90 credits in Peace and Conflict Studies from Uppsala University. She also has 30 credits from other courses.

Swedish EU Presidency

In autumn 2009, The Crown Princess participated in several events within the framework of Sweden's Presidency of the EU. She took part in the official opening in both Stockholm and the UK, the informal meeting of health ministers in Jönköping, the informal meeting of defence ministers in Gothenburg, and the UN environmental conference COP15 in Copenhagen.

Engagement and wedding

The Crown Princess announced her engagement to Daniel Westling on Tuesday 24 February, 2009. The wedding took place on 19 June, 2010 in Storkyrkan, Stockholm.
