The water for the christening was taken from a spring on the Swedish island of Öland, a tradition that was started by the present King and Queen. The Crown Princess, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, Princess Estelle, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Prince Oscar have all been christened in spring water from Öland.
The King was christened using water from the River Jordan, which was previously a royal tradition. Water from the River Jordan used to be bottled and sold to pilgrims to be used for christenings.
In the Bernadotte royal collection there is a glass bottle containing christening water from the River Jordan with a piece of paper on which Queen Victoria has written "This water from the River Jordan was last used at the christening of the Duke of Dalarna", namely when Carl Johan Bernadotte was christened in 1916.
