Christenings are one of the church's sacraments, which means that they are a spiritual act through which a person is unified with Christ and becomes a member of the worldwide church. When a christening is conducted according to the order of the Church of Sweden, the individual being christened becomes a member of the Church of Sweden.
A christening is based on Jesus' baptism and mission commandment:
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)
A christening is not a naming ceremony, but during the christening the name is used to express each individual's personal identity.
