On Tuesday 8 May, The King and Queen held an audience at the Royal Palace of Stockholm for Swedish honorary consuls working in the USA.
During the reception in Queen Lovisa Ulrika's Dining Hall, the honorary consuls were presented to The King and Queen. Sweden's ambassador in the USA, Karin Olofsdotter, then spoke about the role of the consuls and their significance for Sweden.
There are around 350 Swedish honorary consulates. Their task is to assist the embassies and career consulates with various duties. An honorary consulate is led by an honorary consul, who is permanently based in the town where the consulate is located. The honorary consul can be a Swedish citizen or a foreign citizen. The position of honorary consul is an unpaid honorary role.
