On Friday 26 March, The Crown Princess took part in a digital meeting with staff who are currently taking part in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' programmes for diplomats, foreign administrators or assistants.

These programmes prepare participants to serve in the Swedish Foreign Service, either at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm or at Swedish embassies, representations and consulates abroad.

During the meeting, The Crown Princess shared her experiences of official visits and travels abroad.

She also spoke about the importance of the work carried out by non-political officials at government agencies and ministries.

During the video meeting, the course participants also had the opportunity to ask The Crown Princess questions.

Close cooperation

The Swedish Foreign Service and its employees are central to The King and The Crown Princess being able to carry out their duties as head of state and heir to the throne. The Royal Court and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs have long enjoyed broad cooperation.

Did you know, for example, that:

  • Swedish ambassadors are appointed by the Government, but are officially "Extraordinary and Authorised Ambassadors of the King of Sweden"?
  • The King and Queen's state visits and The Crown Princess Couple's official visits abroad are planned and carried out in cooperation with the Swedish Foreign Service?
  • As Crown Prince, The King spent time at the Swedish Embassy in London and the Swedish UN Delegation in New York?
  • During her education, The Crown Princess followed the work of the Swedish embassies in Washington DC and Beijing and the Swedish UN Delegation in New York?
  • The Crown Princess completed the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' diplomat programme in 2006–2007?

The Swedish Foreign Service

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is the largest of the Government Offices of Sweden's eleven ministries. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has more than a hundred overseas agencies – embassies, representations, delegations and consulates – which, together with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, make up the Swedish Foreign Service.
