Monday 27 January was International Holocaust Memorial Day. The Crown Princess visited Poland to attend a memorial ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau's liberation.
Nine survivors from Sweden also attended the ceremony. The Crown Princess, the Speaker of the Riksdag and the Prime Minister represented official Sweden.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was a Nazi concentration and extermination camp located in a territory occupied by Germany during the Second World War, and which is now in Poland.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. In total, around 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz, 1.1 million of whom were Jews. Around a million Jews were murdered in the camp, together with more than 200,000 other prisoners.
