On Tuesday 15 December, The Crown Princess sent a digital greeting during the global launch of the UN's 2020 Human Development Report. The event was arranged by the UNDP in partnership with the Swedish Government.

2020 marked the 30th anniversary of the report, which focused on how economic and human development can take place and be promoted without having a negative impact on the planet's resources.

In her speech, The Crown Princess said:

"Climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity… From the deepest ocean to the highest mountain, there isn’t a single corner of the planet that is unaffected by us humans.

"The good news is that it is not yet too late to address these challenges. And, as this report shows, human development is a key part of the solution."

The launch featured a presentation of an upgraded version of the Human Development Index, which now also includes environmental and climate indicators in its calculations of countries' prosperity. Sweden was ranked sixth in the updated index and seventh in the traditional index.

Speakers at the launch included Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley and Swedish Minister Peter Eriksson.

The UN's global sustainable development goals

In January 2016, the then UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed the Crown Princess as one of 17 advocates for the work involved with the UN's sustainable development goals. The advocates' task is to promote the UN's sustainable development goals – Agenda 2030 – in various ways. Since 2019, The Crown Princess has been part of the alumni group.

As an alumnus, The Crown Princess will continue to focus in particular on work relating to the sea and fishing.
