On Thursday 5 May, Princess Madeleine visited a detention centre in a suburb east of San Francisco.
A detention centre is where children are held under the supervision of the US immigration authorities awaiting a court hearing to determine whether they can stay in the United States. Most of the children, some of whom are as young as nine, come on their own from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, as well as from India, Pakistan and China. They normally stay at a detention centre for one to three months, but they sometime have to stay there for a whole year. The project is part of LSC's Immigrant Youth Initiative, which the World Childhood Foundation has supported since 2004.
