Head of the Bernadotte Library Göran Alm writes on the subject of a traditional wedding date for the Bernadotte dynasty.
The first wedding of the new Bernadotte dynasty in Sweden took place on 19 June 1823 at Stockholm Cathedral. Crown Prince Oskar married the sixteen-year-old Princess Josefina of Leuchtenberg. That year, 19 June fell on a Thursday.
Archbishop of Sweden Carl von Rosenstein officiated at the wedding, dressed in the archbishop's robes that had been made in Paris for the 1751 coronation of King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika.
Following marriage negotiations and a ceremony by proxy in Munich on 22 May that year, the bride came to Stockholm on 13 June. After a few days of rest, the marriage ceremony was conducted on 19 June.

Twenty-seven years later, on 19 June 1850, Crown Prince Karl (XV) married Princess Lovisa of the Netherlands. Once again, the ceremony was held in Stockholm Cathedral, with Archbishop Carl Fredrik af Wingård officiating. At the ceremony, the Archbishop wore the 1751 archbishop's mantle.
Karl XV's younger brother Oskar (II) married Princess Sofia of Nassau on 6 June 1857 in the German town of Biebrich, but the newly-married couple came to Stockholm on 19 June of that year.
It was not until 1976 that another Bernadotte wedding was held on 19 June, when King Carl XVI Gustaf married Miss Silvia Renate Sommerlath. Once again, the wedding took place in Stockholm Cathedral, and Archbishop Olof Sundby officiated, wearing the traditional 1751 archbishop's robes.
In 2010, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden married Mr Daniel Westling. They chose the traditional wedding date of 19 June, and Stockholm Cathedral was the natural choice of venue. Again, in keeping with tradition, the Archbishop of Sweden, Anders Weijryd, officiated. Once again, the Archbishop wore the 1751 archbishop's robes.
