This year is a double jubilee, marking 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected king in 1523 – ushering in a new era that shaped modern Sweden – and it is also King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th jubilee.

This year is a double jubilee, marking 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected king in 1523 – ushering in a new era that shaped modern Sweden – and it is also King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th jubilee.

This year celebrates HM The King's 50 years as Sweden's head of state. The King ascended the throne on 15 September 1973. He is Sweden's longest-reigning monarch of all time.

As Head of State, The King primarily has state ceremonial and official duties, and can shape his own duties within the framework set out in the Instrument of Government.

During his time on the throne, the King has carried out over 80 state visits abroad to promote Sweden and Swedish interests. HM The king is patron and honorary member of a very large number of Swedish academies, organizations and associations.

In connection with the jubilee, a new portrait of The King has been unveiled. The photograph was taken by Thron Ullberg in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

County visits

As part of the celebration of HM The King's 50th anniversary on the throne, the King and Queen visit Sweden's 21 counties in 2023.

The county visits take place in the cities of residence and are hosted by the county governors. The visiting programs are varied but will include public events where the King and Queen will be given the opportunity to meet the county's residents.

Celebrating 500 years of Sweden – in Strängnäs and Stockholm

On June 6, 2023, attention it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected king and the country entered a new era that shaped the nation of Sweden.

The King and Queen start the National Day celebrations in Strängnäs and end the day in Stockholm.

The National Day celebration at Skansen in Stockholm will be more extensive this jubilee year. HM The King will also give a larger National Day reception for representatives of the official Sweden and the diplomatic corps at the Nordic Museum.

Jubilee weekend

HM The King's 50th anniversary on the throne of Sweden is celebrated on September 15 and 16 in Stockholm. On Friday, September 15, Te Deum will be held in The Royal Palace Church. During the day, HM The King also attends a changing of guard and receives a singer's tribute at the outer courtyard of The Royal Palace. The same evening, a larger anniversary dinner is given in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace.

On Saturday 16 September, the King and Queen will travel in cortege through Stockholm.

Exhibitions

During the jubilee year, exhibitions are arranged inside The Royal Palace and on Slottsbacken outside the Royal Palace. In addition, Gripsholm Castle has Gustav Vasa in focus with, among other things, lectures and in-depth tours.
