HM The King's opening speech at Baltic Sea Security Talks in connection with state visit in Poland
Wybrzeze Theatre, Gdańsk, Poland
(The spoken version shall take precedence)
Your Excellency Mr. President of the Republic of Poland,
Madame First Lady of the Republic of Poland,
Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,
For centuries, people, goods, and ideas have crossed the Baltic Sea between Poland and Sweden, shaping our societies and economies. Far from separating us, the sea has brought our countries and our peoples closer together geographically and economically.
This sense of closeness is especially evident in Gdańsk, a place with deep and historical ties to Sweden. Walking through the old town, I am struck by how much it resembles the old town of Stockholm. It is certainly easy to feel at home here!
Ladies and gentlemen,
This state visit takes place at a time of significant security challenges. The development in the Middle East is a reminder of how quickly the world can change and how rapidly we can find ourselves in a new and unpredictable situation. And Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine has grave consequences for European security and for all of us. The impact is clear, not least in the Baltic Sea region. Trusted partnerships are therefore crucial. As two leading Baltic Sea nations, we share both an interest in and responsibility for safeguarding stability in our region.
The partnership between Poland and Sweden is closer than ever. Our cooperation extends across governments, businesses, civil society organisations, and citizens.
Together we are well equipped to meet the security challenges before us. As NATO allies and EU member states, we are part of a wider community that stands up for our shared interests and values. Unity and solidarity make us stronger and will continue to guide us in the years ahead.
I look forward to today’s discussions on how Poland and Sweden can do even more together to enhance security in our neighbourhood – the Baltic Sea region. By deepening our cooperation, we are building a safer home for our citizens.
Thank you.
