HM The King's speech at reception for Honorary Consuls in Asia and Oceania

The Royal Palace, Stockholm

(The spoken word shall take precedence)

Esteemed Consuls,
Ambassadors,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Honoured guests,

After a few years’ pause – mainly due to the pandemic – I am pleased to revive our tradition of welcoming the Honorary Consuls of Sweden to the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

Honorary Consuls have long played a crucial role in our global presence promoting trade, cultural exchange, crisis response and support for our citizens. Often in places without a formal embassy or consulate.

Esteemed Consuls,

The ties between Europe, Asia and the Indo-Pacific region are vital to our shared security, economic growth, and development.

In this age of rapid technological change, the ability to innovate together will determine our future prosperity. By connecting Swedish expertise with global opportunities, you help strengthen trade relations and accelerate our progress towards the green and digital transition.

Beyond economics, the Honorary Consuls swift action during crises – whether natural disasters or political unrest – safeguards our citizens abroad.

Your leadership in cultural diplomacy also ensures that Swedish traditions, arts, and values are celebrated and shared worldwide.

Esteemed Consuls,

Her Majesty the Queen and I value the warm welcome we receive from the Honorary Consuls whenever we travel around the world. I recently returned from the World Expo in Japan, where such professionalism was greatly appreciated.

Your dedication and work continue to shape our country’s role internationally. As you return to your posts, I encourage you to continue promoting Swedish interests. This way you uphold the values that make Sweden a respected nation across the globe. For that, we are truly grateful.

Thank you!
