The Crown Princess Couple attend a ceremony in memory of the Holocaust

Thursday 27 January was International Holocaust Memorial Day. The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel marked the day by attending a memorial ceremony at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

The memorial ceremony at the Royal Dramatic Theatre was arranged by the Micael Bindefeld Foundation in Memory of the Holocaust. Each year, the foundation presents a scholarship to support those with a desire to convey knowledge about the Holocaust. This year's scholarship was awarded to Anna Florén, Programme Director for the Norwegian-Swedish Voksenåsen project, for her work relating to education and remembrance journeys to Holocaust memorial locations in Norway. The scholarship will be used to give more young Swedes the opportunity to make remembrance journeys.

During the scholarship presentation at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, The Crown Princess gave a speech in which she said:

When our neighbouring country was occupied, more than 80 years ago, the echoes were heard in Sweden. Just as other major events in the world around us create echoes in our country today. And if we listen hard enough, if we preserve our memories, these echoes can still be heard.

International Holocaust Memorial Day

27 January – the date on which the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp was liberated in 1945 – is International Holocaust Memorial Day.

The UN declared the date an international day of remembrance in 2005. It has been a memorial day in Sweden since 2001.
