The Crown Princess visits Västerbotten County

On Thursday 2 September, The Crown Princess visited Västerbotten County to highlight initiatives being carried out in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Crown Princess's visit to the county took place in Umeå and Skellefteå, and was hosted by County Governor Helene Hellmark Knutsson.

Umeå

The Crown Princess and the County Governor began the day by visiting Umeå City Mission, where they were welcomed by Director Johan Tovetjärn who gave a tour of the city mission's premises.

Director Johan Tovetjärn, infection control physicians Stephan Stenmark and Gunilla Persson, district nurse Lena Rehnman and Chief Medical Officer Maria Marklund then spoke about the pandemic and its effects on the city mission's work.

At Maja Beskow Upper Secondary School, The Crown Princess and the County Governor were welcomed by head teacher Henrik Ragnvaldsson, Director of Education Ann-Christine Gradin and Assistant Director of Education Niklas Wallmark.

Students Agnes Edeljung, Noah Grönberg and Ellinor Hannerfors described their experiences of attending school during the pandemic and how they have been affected.

The visit concluded with a brief tour of the school.

Skellefteå

During the journey from Umeå to Skellefteå, infection control physician Stephan Stenmark and Susanne Lantz from the county administrative board told The Crown Princess and the County Governor about the work carried out in the county in connection with the pandemic.

On arrival at Skellefteå, The Crown Princess and the County Governor were welcomed to Sara Cultural Centre by Chair of the Municipal Executive Board Lorents Burman, Municipal Director Kristina Sundin Jonsson and Municipal Commissioner Evelina Falhesson.

At the Mandeln restaurant in Sara Cultural Centre, the Sami dish gurpi was served for lunch. The Crown Princess and the County Governor were then given a guided tour of the cultural centre.

At the cultural centre, CEO of Västerbotten Theatre Fransesca Quartey began the final part of the visit with a quotation from Amanda Gorman's The Hill We Climb, translated by Jason Diakité (Timbuktu). She then described how the pandemic has affected the theatre.

The visit ended with a short extract from When the Prince Came to the Village, a free interpretation of Torgny Lindgren's play In the Waters of Variegated Leaves. The narrative performance relates to when Prince Eugene visited Norsjö and met the artist Herman Andersson.

The Crown Princess's visit to Västerbotten ended at Northvolt, where CEO Peter Carlsson spoke about how the company has dealt with the pandemic and the work to complete the battery factory.

The Royal Family visit Sweden's counties

In connection with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, members of the Royal Family will be visiting Sweden's 21 counties at the initiative of HM The King.

The first four visits took place in autumn 2020, but subsequent visits were postponed due to the second wave of the pandemic. The visit to Kalmar marked the resumption of visits to Sweden's counties during autumn 2021.

Through these visits, The King hopes to show the Royal Family's solidarity with those who have been affected and to highlight local initiatives within different sectors of society.

All visits will be adapted in view of the ongoing pandemic, and will be carried out in accordance with the Public Health Agency of Sweden's recommendations.
