H.K.H. Kronprinsessans tal vid svenska ambassadens mottagning i Tokyo

Okura Hotel, Tokyo, Japan

(Det talade ordet gäller)

Your Imperial Highness,
Ministers,
Excellencies,
Esteemed Nobel laureates,
Madam Ambassador,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a true pleasure for Prince Daniel and me to visit Japan, especially at this beautiful time of year. It is also wonderful to see so many friends of Sweden gathered here tonight.

Let me begin by congratulating Japan on receiving two Nobel prizes this year. What a fantastic achievement. Professor Kitagawa and Professor Sakaguchi, we are so happy and honoured to have you with us here tonight. Congratulations – and we look forward to receiving you in Stockholm in December!

I would also like to extend a special welcome to Professor Noyori, Nobel laureate of 2001. It is wonderful to see you again, Professor.

Let me also congratulate Japan on the great success of Expo 2025. It has been an honour to visit Osaka and to take part in the closing chapter of Sweden’s participation focusing on sustainability and the Arctic – two themes that are more important than ever.

Ladies and gentlemen,

During this visit, we also had the opportunity to attend an official memorial service at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, commemorating the victims of the atomic bombings 80 years ago. Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki is not only about looking back at history, but also about honouring a profound tragedy that we must never forget. We owe it to those who suffered to carry forward a deep respect for the lessons of the past, and to renew our shared promise that such a horror will never be repeated.

Ladies and gentlemen,

This weekend we visited Naoshima and the Setouchi Art Triennale, where we were treated to some exceptional art experiences. The memories of the visits to the beautiful islands will stay with us for a long time to come.

The world faces many challenges, which makes the exchange of ideas and platforms for interaction more valuable than ever. The Expo in Osaka has been one such platform. Over the past year, countless friendships have been formed – many of you here tonight are part of that story.

Prince Daniel and I are grateful for your presence and for the spirit of cooperation that unites us.

Although Japan and Sweden are far apart geographically, our relationship is both close and strong.

Both our countries know that progress do not come by chance, but through commitment and hard work. There is, apparently, a Japanese saying: “It is effort that makes the impossible possible.” Japan and Sweden prove this true every day.

Thank you.
