State visit from Finland day 1 — watch a film here
On Tuesday 17 April, Finland's President Sauli Niinistö arrived for a two-day state visit to Sweden.
The Presidential couple were welcomed at Arlanda Airport by Prince Daniel, and were met by The King and Queen at the Royal Mews. They then travelled by horse-drawn cortège, accompanied by escort troops and standard bearers from the Royal Life Guards, to the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
The cortège made its way to the Inner Courtyard via Norrmalmstorg, Kungsträdgårdsgatan, Gustav Adolfs Torg, Norrbro, Skeppsbron and Slottsbacken. The Swedish Navy's Music Corps performed at Norrbro, and the Armed Forces Music Corps performed in the Inner Courtyard.
After the President and The King had inspected the Guard of Honour, the welcoming ceremonies continued at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, where the Presidential couple also met The Crown Princess Couple. Here, an exchange of gifts took place. The King and Queen presented the Presidential couple with a crystal bowl from Orrefors and a map of the Nordic countries from 1539.
After The King and Queen had hosted lunch for the Presidential couple at the Royal Palace, The Queen and Mrs Haukio visited Moderna Museet
on Skeppsholmen.
The museum is currently showing an exhibition by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, one of the Nordic region's best-known contemporary artists. She has been working since the 1990s, and is a pioneer in the development of video installations.
Mrs Haukio and The Queen then visited the education company Hyper Island, where they took part in an interactive discussion about how to increase cultural and Nordic identity in a borderless digital world. Hyper Island was founded in 1996 in Karlskrona, and offers education in digital and interactive media. It has more than 400 students from 30 different countries, with campuses in Karlskrona, Stockholm and Manchester.
