On Thursday 19 September, the Royal Family attended a reception in connection with The King's 40th jubilee. The reception was held in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, where The King gave his speech from the throne on 19 September 1973.
The invited guests included representatives from the Riksdag and the Government, municipalities, county councils, the business community and organisations, organisations of which The King is patron and the royal academies. Prime Ministers and Speakers who have served during The King's 40 years as Head of State were also invited.

The Crown Princess gave a speech, in which she said:

"Dad, our family has seen how tirelessly and loyally you work for what you believe in, and in Sweden's best interests. Your strong drive and your great commitment are admirable. Your hard work has led to great appreciation and respect. You and mum have often seen evidence of this, not least during the past year when you have toured the country and recently visit every county in Sweden."

The King then gave a speech, in which he said:

"As I stand in front of you again — here in the Hall of State, 40 years later to the day — I feel the same great obligation to my duty as I did then. I now have forty years of experience and deeper knowledge of both our nation and the world around us. Not least, I have even stronger faith in the go-ahead spirit and the many good forces working in the interests of Sweden's continued development."
The Royal Chapel Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Court Organist Mary Ljungquist Hén, then performed "Sweden", with words by Verner von Heidenstam and music by Wilhelm Stenhammar.

40 years on the throne — 40 years serving Sweden

The jubilee exhibition "40 years on the throne — 40 years serving Sweden" details King Carl XVI Gustaf's eventful reign as King and Head of State. In the Hall of State and certain Reception Rooms — the setting for many of The King's official duties — objects and images from The King's forty years as Head of State have been brought together.
