The King attends the Swedish Ski Championships in Umeå

On Thursday 16 January, The King opened the 2014 Swedish Ski Championships and Swedish Championships Week in Umeå. He then watched the skiathlon competitions.
The King opened the 2014 Swedish Ski Championships and Swedish Championships Week in Umeå with a speech, which he concluded by saying:
"Now I — along with many others — look forward to the exciting competitions, in which our skilled Swedish skiers will battle for the honorary title Swedish Champion Skier."

The King then watched the ladies' skiathlon over 2 x 7.5 km. The winner was Piteå Elit's Charlotte Kalla, who pulled ahead at the first ascent and then remained unchallenged.
 
The King also watched Marcus Hellner from Gellivare win his fifth consecutive Swedish Championship gold medal in the skiathlon, beating Åsarna's Lars Nelson in a tough finishing battle by just 0.3 seconds. This was Hellner's eighth gold medal in all.

The Swedish Ski Championships and Swedish Championships Week


The Swedish cross-country skiing championships were held in Umeå on 16-19 January. The Swedish Ski Championships are part of Swedish Championships Week.
 
Swedish Championships Week is arranged by the Swedish Sports Confederation and Sveriges Television in association with the relevant specialist sports associations and the host town. The aim of Swedish Championships Week is to hold Swedish championships in various sports in a single town over the course of a week.
