On Tuesday 16 April, Prince Daniel visited the Department of Transplantation Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge.
The Prince was welcomed by consultant Lars Wennberg and Professor Bo-Göran Ericzon at the department.

He then learnt about the work of the department, including how transplants were dealt with in the past, the department's view of the future and the work of a transplant coordinator.

The Prince then visited the Department of Clinical Pathology and Cytology, where he followed the course of a biopsy sample through the laboratory and saw a demonstration of electron microscopy.

At the Department of Renal Medicine, The Prince found out about the latest research.

The day concluded with a visit to the Department of Transplantation Surgery. There, The Prince met Sarah Appelqvist, who received a new liver when she was 10 months old, and 11-month-old Izabelle. Izabelle was born with a defective liver, and received a liver transplant four months ago.

The visit to the Department of Transplantation Surgery ended with The Prince meeting Lena and her husband Stefan. Lena donated one of her own kidneys to Stefan, and the operation was carried out a week ago.
