On Thursday 24 January, formal audiences were held at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
The new ambassadors were Gerald Bruce Thomson from Australia, Jorge Ricardo Putzeys Urigüen from Guatemala and Manuel Antonio Barrantes Rodríguez from Costa Rica. Gerald Bruce Thomson's previous posts include Counsellor for the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea, and he most recently served as Assistant Secretary of the North East Asia Branch at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia. Jorge Ricardo Putzeys Urigüen has previously served as ambassador in locations including Tel Aviv and Montevideo, and most recently served as Head of the Multilateral Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala. Manuel Antonio Barrantes Rodríguez is concurrently accredited from Oslo. At the ceremony, the ambassadors submit their credentials (a document from their head of state) to The King, who then grants them the formal right to work in Sweden. Formal audiences follow a traditional ceremony. The ambassador is collected in one of the Royal Mews' carriages from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and is taken to the Royal Palace of Stockholm. The King and the ambassador then talk in private for around fifteen minutes.
