On Tuesday 27 August, The King presented the Polar Music Prize to Kaija Saariaho and Youssou N'Dour at Stockholm Concert Hall.
During the ceremony, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra played under the direction of Hans Ek, and artists including soprano Hanna Husáhr, Neneh Cherry, Karima Nayt, Carlou D, flautist Anders Jonhäll, Ale Möller and Timbuktu performed music by the prize winners. After the award ceremony, a banquet was held at the Grand Hôtel. The Polar Music Prize was instituted in 1989 by Stig "Stikkan" Anderson, and the first prize-giving ceremony was held in 1992.
