On Thursday 12 July, The King learnt about the work being carried out to salvage silver coins, minted by King Erik XIV, from the warship Mars which sank off the north of Öland on 31 May 1564.
During the first two weeks of July, the first research expedition has taken place to the wreck of the warship Mars. The ship was sunk in battle off the north of Öland on 31 May 1564. According to contemporary accounts, the vessel sank following an explosion at the prow. The research expedition is a collaboration between the Maris Maritime Archaeological Research Institute at Södertörn University, Deep Sea Productions and Ocean Discovery from Västervik, which found the wreck.
