The King launches celebrations to mark 20 years of Drottningholm as a World Heritage Site

On Tuesday 3 May, The King launched the celebrations to mark the fact that it has been 20 years since Drottningholm became Sweden's first World Heritage Siteexternal link, opens in new window.
The launch marks the start of a year of talks and exhibitions relating to Drottningholm as Sweden's first World Heritage Siteexternal link, opens in new window.

In his speech, The King said: "Drottningholm has long attracted a great deal of attention, both in Sweden and abroad. The Palace, with its grounds, the Chinese Pavilion and the Palace Theatre, was inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1991. Today, this World Heritage Site is part of our everyday lives.

"Drottningholm is also one of Sweden's most visited palaces, and the area attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. All year round, the grounds provide a place for walking, picnicking, playing rounders, skiing and sledging. This is a tradition that stretches back more than 200 years."
 
According to UNESCO, "The ensemble of Drottningholm — castle, theatre, Chinese Pavilion and gardens — is the best example of a royal residence built in the 18th century in Sweden and is representative of all European architecture of that period". 

Drottningholm was the world's 559th World Heritage Site.
