The King and Queen visit the USA, day 3
On Saturday 22 October, The King and Queen continued their visit to the USA.
In the morning, The King and Queen arrived in Jamestown, in the state of New York. Together with Sweden's ambassador to the USA, Jonas Hafström, they visited the Norden Club which celebrates its centenary this year. The visit was hosted by John 'Chip' Johnson, President of the Norden Club. The King and Queen also met local politicians, the Jamestown High School Marching Band and local Scout troops.
The celebrations took place at Jamestown Community College, where traditional Swedish songs and dances were performed. After lunch, The King gave a speech in which he referred to the strong links between Sweden and Jamestown, and how Swedish emigrants helped to build up a strong local economy around the turn of the previous century.
After the visit, The King said: "I am delighted to see how the people of Jamestown are maintaining Swedish traditions, and how our Swedish emigrants are an integral and important part of American society."
After lunch, The King and Queen visited the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History
. Roger Tory Peterson, the son of a Swedish emigrant, was one of the world's best-known birdwatchers, and wrote the first field guide to birdwatching in 1934. He was passionate about bringing knowledge of animals and nature to a wider audience, and the institute now continues his work.
