On Friday 15 April, The Crown Princess Couple visited Gotland for the launch of the celebrations to mark the 350th anniversary of Swedish scientist, inventor and industrialist Christopher Polhem's birth.
The day began with a visit to Polhemsgården in Tingstäde, the farm that is thought to be Polhem's birthplace and where he lived during his early youth. The Crown Princess Couple were given a tour of the farm by the local history society's chairwoman Barbro Andersson and secretary Berit Pettersson. The Crown Princess Couple then attended a talk at Gotland's conference centre, Wisby Strand, which is situated in Visby Harbour with views of the sea. The subject of the talk was "Polhem then, now and in the future". County Governor Cecilia Schelin Seidegård began by talking about The Crown Princess Couple's stay at Furillen on the previous day. The visit had been Gotland's wedding present to The Crown Princess Couple. After a short walk from Wisby Strand through Almedalen, The Crown Princess Couple visited Gotland Museum, where they were given a tour of the Polhem exhibition at the Fenomenalen Science Center. Lunch was then served in the Bildsten Hall at the museum. After lunch, the official opening of the Polhem exhibition took place at Fenomenalen. The Crown Princess Couple opened the exhibition by turning a key which opened a Polhem lock. Afterwards, The Crown Princess Couple visited Haima 2, a home for young asylum seekers who come to Sweden alone. The Crown Princess Couple met staff and a number of young people who told their stories. Haima 2 has room for a total of nine boys aged 15-18. After Haima 2, The Crown Princess Couple visited Gotland University. At Visby's Baltic Center, The Crown Princess Couple learnt about the university's focus on game development. At the motion capture studio, they saw how human movements are transferred to computer game characters, and students demonstrated their games. The Crown Princess Couple then learnt about wind power developments and the education of future followers in Polhem's footsteps. The Crown Princess Couple's visit to Gotland concluded with dinner at the County Governor's official residence in Visby.
