The Crown Princess Couple visit Botkyrka
On Tuesday 15 March, The Crown Princess Couple visited Botkyrka Municipality in Stockholm.
The day began with a visit to Subtopia, a creative collective where people from all over the world can come together to realise their dreams. Subtopia is 14,000 m² in size, and more than 3,000 people work and study here every day.
Chair of the Municipal Executive Board Katarina Berggren welcomed The Crown Princess Couple. There then followed an informal breakfast with representatives from some of the projects at Subtopia. The discussions focused on Botkyrka, the growing interest in contemporary circus, and social issues.
Karin Lekberg, site manager at Subtopia, then explained about Alby FEJM (Botkyrka Workers' Educational Centre's stage school for young people aged between 4 and 20), Starthuset (a place for entrepreneurs and creative people who want to realise their ideas and establish a business within the creative industries) and Filmbasen
(the Stockholm region's resource centre for young film-makers).
The Crown Princess Couple were then given a tour of the circus hall and Studio 3. Here, they met the group Vifira, who were rehearsing their performance "Hello!" which will be premiering in a few weeks' time.
At Hangaren, Clowns Without Borders explained about what they do. The association was founded in Spain in 1986, and the Swedish branch opened in 1996. Secretary-General Jennifer Vidmo talked about her recent visit to Rwanda, where the association met 2,000 children in two weeks and worked to spread hope through laughter. The tour of Subtopia concluded with a visit to Circus Arts AB and Burnt Out Punks.
After Subtopia, The Crown Princess Couple visited Botkyrka Women's Resource Centre, a non-profit, politically and religiously independent organisation that is part of Winnet Sverige. Manager Shahina Begum explained about the work of the organisation. The Crown Princess Couple then met a number of participants, including Linda Malki, who started her business CL Assistans three years ago and now has 40 employees. An informal discussion dealt with enterprise, democracy and women's rights.
Lunch was served at Hågelby Gård, after which The Crown Princess Couple went to Tumba Centre.
Here, The Crown Princess Couple attended the opening ceremony for Climate Square, after which they were shown an exhibition about Botkyrka's environmental work. Exhibitors included DeLaval, Malmsjö School and Botkyrka Municipality. The Crown Princess Couple also met a "climate family", who had been part of the climate family project in autumn 2010, in which five families learned more about how to live a more environmentally friendly everyday life.
The visit to Tumba Centre was rounded off with a performance by Alby FEJM, who sang "Sverige" by rock group Kent and the song "Långt ifrån lagom".
The day ended with a visit to coffee roasters Johan & Nyström. The Crown Princess Couple were shown the roastery by John Damgaard, who also talked about their ethical work. Master coffee roaster Fredrik Ekström described and demonstrated the coffee roasting process. At the end of their visit, The Crown Princess Couple tried seven varieties of coffee and three varieties of tea using the Brazilian cupping grading system.
