On Thursday 9 September, The King presented the Stockholm Water Prize to Dr Rita R Colwell at Stockholm City Hall, in recognition of her research into water studies and water technology.
Dr Colwell's work investigates ways of preventing the spread of infectious waterborne diseases, and her outstanding achievements include efforts to control the spread of cholera.
Dr Colwell is the first woman to be awarded the Stockholm Water Prize. Sunita Narain won the award in 2005, but this was in her capacity as Director of the Centre for Science and Environment in India.
In his speech, The King emphasised the importance of World Water Week and the Stockholm Water Prize, and noted that these have become a forum for the world's leading experts and decision-makers on matters relating to water.
