On Tuesday 28 September, The Crown Princess Couple visited Pau, the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who subsequently became King Karl XIV Johan.
The mayor of Pau, Mme Martine Lignières-Cassou, welcomed The Crown Princess Couple.

The Crown Princess Couple first visited the Musée Bernadotte, which is located in the house where Bernadotte was born in 1763.

They then visited the Château de Pau which, with more than 100,000 visitors each year, is one of the most popular buildings in France. King Henri IV was born here in 1553. Large vases made of porphyry (a rock containing varying colours), which Bernadotte sent as a gift when he became king of Sweden, are kept at the castle.
