King and Queen continue state visit to Brazil

The King and Queen continued with their state visit to Brazil on Wednesday 24 March. The day began with an official visit to the Supreme Court. The King and Queen were greeted by the President of the Supreme Court, Gilmar Mendes, in the presence of all the members of the court.
The Supreme Court is Brazil's highest legal authority, which decides on constitutional issues and reviews ordinary cases. The court has 11 members, who are appointed by the President for life. The court's sessions have been televised live since 2002.

This was followed by a visit to the National Congress. The National Congress comprises two chambers: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The King and Queen were greeted by the Speaker of the Senate, José Sarney, and the Speaker for the House of Representatives, Michel Temer.

The visit was followed by a meeting with President Lula Da Silva at the Itamaraty Palace, where the presidential couple hosted an official lunch for the King and Queen.

The Itamaraty Palace is Brazil's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and was designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The building looks like it is made of glass, with its arcades reflected in an ornamental pool with islands covered with tropical plants.
