Let me express the Queen´s and my own gratitude for a splendid meal and delightful company. It´s good to be back in Ottawa again. I have fond memories of our last visit on Parliament Hill, in 1988. We had the pleasure of attending the Question Period, where we listened to some very vivid and interesting discussions.
In our societies, the role of Parliaments is central. It is the foundation upon which our democracies rest. Every year, as I open the Swedish Parliament, I remind myself of the responsibility we all have in promoting democracy, not only at home but throughout the world.
Your own role, as Speakers of the House and of the Senate, is of course crucial in embodying the power and dignity of this institution.
It is a pleasure for us to have been invited to your table. I propose a toast - to the continued strengthening of our two democracies.
Thank you and skål!
