Ladies and gentlemen,
First of all, I would like to thank you for arranging this conference “World bioenergy – Clean Vehicles & Fuels."
It has been said many times and it needs to be repeated; the impact of climate change and the consequences of global warming is one of the most important issues for humanity to solve. Humans have always interacted with the environment, and the rich records of these past encounters give us insights into how our ancestors dealt with change.
However, the Earth today is fundamentally different from anything that humans have experienced before. Human beings have become a global geophysical force, profoundly influencing the planetary environment. Therefore the interaction of modern societies with our environment concerns us all – citizens, scientists, politicians and business leaders. We all have to take our responsibility and act for a good future.
Sweden has a long tradition of caring for the environment. In more recent years we have shown that energy saving is possible. Oil and other fossil resources can be reduced and emissions of greenhouse gases can be lessened. Sweden serves as an example of how a modern society can move towards a low carbon economy and gain sustainable growth. Tackling climate change will require leadership and commitment. We need to support each other for sustainable solutions for the future.
With these words I would like to wish you all success in your important duty. I look forward to an interesting day.
